Wallcoverings provide an ideal design element for a variety of settings, from retail outlets and hospitality environments to museums. Many media options are available that cater specifically to wallcoverings. Some manufacturers take traditional media selections and offer textures and special finishes to create enhanced looks and feels.
The first part in this series discusses the aesthetic appeal, necessity, and probable growth for textured and finished wallcovering films. In order to serve a range of demands, a variety of textured and finished options are available that range from light to heavy.
Here, we highlight options available from a variety of media manufacturers and distributors.
3M Commercial Graphics offers a range of finishes in its overlaminates, including 3M Envision Wrap Gloss Overlaminate 8548G, 3M Scotchcal Gloss Overlaminate 8518, 3M Scotchcal Luster Overlaminate 8519, 3M Scotchcal Matte Overlaminate 8520, and 3M Scotchcal Ultra-Matte Overlaminate 8915.
For pigmented or textured films, 3M offers its Wrap Film Series 1080 in carbon fibers, brush metals, gloss, satin, and matte.
Arlon Graphics, LLC currently supplies films that mimic materials such as carbon fiber, brushed aluminum, and other embossed patterns. “Our Ultimate Premium Plus line not only offers these textures, but the finishes that include pearlescent, matte, and gloss metallic,” says Kevin Rourke, national specifications manager, Arlon.
Asphalt Art USA products have a simple bead texture, which is designed to provide a non-slip surface. “While the non-slip aspect is not necessary for wall applications, the texture is attractive and helps diffuse light glare and hide surface imperfections,” says Marcel Medved, business development manager, Asphalt Art.
Avery Dennison Graphic Solutions’ MPI 2611 Wall Film is a white, digitally printable premium calendered vinyl film with high-impact image clarity and scuff resistance. Many patterns and effects are digitally printed with the film.
According to Joel Ross, senior marketing communications manager, Avery Dennison, the MPI 2611 Wall Film is easily applied on properly prepared wall surfaces. Gloss, matte, or luster overlaminates can be used to protect the graphics and create various effects.
Catalina Graphic Films’ Wall-Tex is a 7-mil white woven polyester fabric designed for high-quality interior wall graphic applications onto painted walls, wall papers, and wood paneling. It is compatible with eco-solvent, solvent, latex, and UV-curable printing. Available in either 54- or 60-inch widths, Wall-Tex offers distinct choices and textures for wall graphic applications.
DHJ International offers several fabrics in its Decoprint line that provide textures for wallcovering applications. Decoprint Grain and Decoprint Ray are 100 percent polyester with a heavy weight canvas appearance. Decoprint High Drop is a glossy textile surface fabric.
DreamScape offers a variety of textures and specialty wallcovering media, including more than 14 different textures in its 20 oz. vinyl wallcoverings and four specialty substrates that include Silver, Gold, Black Flash, and Bling. “All of these are 20 oz. Type II commercial grade wallcoverings. Terralon is our non-vinyl, eco-friendly Type II wallcovering. We also offer a peel-and-stick version of our wallcoverings called WallWrap, which is available in three textures with a repositionable adhesive,” explains Peter Spotto, director, sales, DreamScape.
Drytac Corporation’s textured/finished wallcovering options include Canvas—premium, embossed PVC laminate with canvas-like textured surface; Leather—soft PVC with semi-matte antique leather finish; Linen—premium, embossed non-glare PVC with linen-like textured surface; and Emerytex—non-glare, scuff-resistant PVC with pebble-like finish. The company also offers liquids that are specifically coated for applications such as canvas prints and digitally printed wallcoverings.
KAPCO Graphic Products offers Adhesive Backed Wall Fabric, a new addition to its solvent and latex media portfolio as of September 2013. The product sticks to any non-porous flat surface and its removable adhesive does not leave any residue behind. It is available in 36- and 54-inch wide rolls.
KoroGraphics Digital Wallcoverings offer high-quality flexible textures that produce combinations of color, light, shape, and shadow. Eleven textures are offered including Artist Canvas, Glassed Out, Matte, Abaco Beach, Nassau Dunes, Chubb Rocks, Grotto, Mongahello, Great Sail, Trade Route, and Cheyenne.
LexJet provides a range of finishes and texture options within its wallcovering media lines including LexJet Velvet WallPro SUV, LexJet Fresco WallPro SUV, LexJet Pebble WallPro SUV, and LexJet Canvas WallPro SUV, all of which are commercial grade wallpaper with a Class A Fire rating and bright white base for an expanded color gamut. LexJet Print-N-Stick Fabric is an inkjet printable fabric with a bright white point back with a repositionable, removable adhesive designed for trouble-free application to a variety of flat surfaces.
MACtac Graphic Products’ IMAGin line of digital print media includes wallNOODLE and ROODLE vinyl wall graphics films, which provide a flat matte surface for posters and wall murals. It also offers RoughRAP, featuring a smooth gloss vinyl facestock that is highly conformable for rough and textured surface walls such as brick and cinder block; it allows the installer to use the natural texture of the wall and give the graphic a painted on look. Additionally, IMAGin offers the textured fabric DecoSatin product, allowing the installer to create a high-end wallpaper-like appearance. Finally, MACtac offers PERMACOLOR DecoLam, which is a specialty laminate line of textured films such as carbon fiber, leather, fine and coarse grain wood, velvet, and brushed metal.
The Photo Tex Group, Inc. product can be printed to resemble a stone or brick wall with a matte finish. Additionally, Walter Gierlach Jr., president, Photo Tex, suggests that users liquid laminate the product to give it a gloss finish.
Presto Tape recently announced CanvasTac, a peel-and-stick white canvas material. The 8 oz., 17-mil product offers a premium coating that is both repositionable and removable. The microsphere adhesive on the backside allows for easy installation and removal.
Qué Media Inc. offers textured wall media in its Magnate line of products, which includes substrates printable with UV, solvent, and latex ink sets. Of note is its FabTaque, a 100 percent polyester woven fabric. It offers a soft texture appearance with a matte finish.
Ultraflex Systems, Inc. supplies four commercial grade printable wallcoverings called Wallscapes, available in Bali Hai, Matte, Stardust, and Suede embossments. All are fire retardant and come with a five year warranty and are available in 54-inch wide by various lengths. Ultraflex also offers FabriTac—a PVC- free, outdoor durable, repositionable adhesive-backed wall fabric.
As wallcovering applications continue to gain ground, media manufacturers and distributors listen to customer demands and the latest trends to provide unique options that stand out. In addition to aesthetic appeal, wallcoverings with special effects also provide functionality, helping to cover imperfections and reduce abrasion. Print providers and end customers benefit from the innovation represented in digitally printed media offerings.
