Roland DG introduced the world’s first all-in-one, high-quality inkjet color printer and precision contour cutter, the CAMMJET CJ-60, in 1996. The company continuously pushes the bar in innovation. In 2011 the VersaUV LEJ-640 hybrid UV flatbed inkjet printer was launched. It prints at up to 64 inches on a range of substrates to offer print service providers (PSPs) endless versatility.
The VersaUV LEJ-640 hybrid offers PSPs a device for both flexible and rigid media. UV LED ink sets provide next generation technology, allowing printing on thinner substrates without distortion. Upon initial setup, users choose between two ink formulations, ECO-UV or ECO-UV S. The original ECO-UV includes clear coat. These inks adhere to a range of treated and untreated substrates. Instant drying and flexible, prints can be stretched and applied around curved surfaces without cracking.
ECO-UV S offers added flexibility, stretching up to 220 percent, but is offered in CMYK and white. The elasticity of the ink allows graphics to wrap uneven shapes, indentations, corners, and curved services.
Up to two years outdoor durability can be achieved when a print is protected with a clear coat.
There are four ink configurations, three for ECO-UV and one for ECO-UV S. For ECO-UV, CMYK+White+Clear, CMYK+White+White, as well as a CMYK+Clear+Clear option are available. ECO-UV S works with CMYK plus white in two additional channels.
Digital Output welcomed the VersaUV LEJ-640 into its Beverly, MA facility this May. To truly evaluate the printer and its technology, we set up and ran the unit on multiple substrates. Working with Roland technicians the device was up and running fairly quickly, in the span of less than a day. Prior to receiving the printer, we chose ECO-UV CMYK+White+Clear.
Roland touts an intense customer care philosophy regarding install. A hands-on group, we unpacked and assembled the device before the service team was on site. The installation manuals were easy to follow and within hours the unit was up and running.
Steven Tu, product manager - UV printers, Roland, explains, “we are committed to a positive customer experience. When our customers commit to a Roland product we provide complete support so that the device is up and running without delay.”
The VersaUV LEJ-640 is equipped with VersaWorks RIP software, exclusively developed by Roland. Supporting the Roland Color system, it accurately reproduces over 1,000 spot colors from color charts and swatch books. The Roland Texture Library features 72 ready-to-use texture patterns that can be applied to designs by layering the printer’s clear coat ink. New to the VersaUV LEJ-640 is the option to integrate X-Rite, Inc. color management tools.
Supplied color profiles provide several output modes—Artistic 1,440x1,440, High Quality 720x1,440, Standard 720x1,080, and High Speed 360x720 dpi print quality. Each displays print time estimation and predictive ink usage. We found High Quality and Standard Quality resolutions satisfied even the most demanding requests. Printing at the highest image resolution levels of Artistic and occasionally with High Quality we noticed a slight oversaturation of color, due to the layering impact of UV inks, and used the RIP’s ink adjusting tool to lower ink levels.
With VersaWorks we also proof sections of files, diffuse errors, and crop, tile and nest images for optimum media use.
The unit is low profile and attractive. It is configured with an optional Deodorizing Unit BOFA Print Pro, which eliminates most fumes from the UV inks. We print on 4x8-foot sheets of six mm EnCore MightyPrint Foamboard, three mm Sintra PVC, four mm fluted polypropylene, flexible vinyl, paper, and clear 20-mil polycarbonate sheeting. The hybrid pinch roller system delivers both rigid and flexible substrates without any difficulty.
