Booming and Bustling in the City

Highlights from SGIA 2012

The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association’s (SGIA’s) annual expo kicked off on October 18, 2012 in Las Vegas, NV at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The organization posted a record in attendance, with more than 22,000 registered for the show—and the number continued to climb as the event went on. Aisles were packed with vendors and customers examining the latest trends in the graphic arts. With the array of exhibitors it was near impossible to track down every item debuted at SGIA.

3M Commercial Graphics introduced the Envision line of films. Envision Translucent Films and Envision Diffuser Films are the first graphic films optimized for use with LEDs, which allow manufacturers to achieve maximum sign face brightness while requiring fewer light sources. Envision Wrap Films are high-performance, non-PVC media. Launched at the show were Envision Print Wrap Film 480Cv3 and Envision Gloss Wrap Overlaminate 8548G. This next generation of films offers sustainability and high performance.

Also of note, Epson promoted the flagship model in its SureColor S-series, the S70670. The 64-inch printer features Epson UltraChrome GSX ink that delivers up to ten colors including an optional white and silver metallic, as well as a first ever standard light black for improved grayscale and reduced metamerism.

Fujifilm North America Corporation announced the Acuity Advance Select printer, shown for the first time globally. One of the new features found on the device is the inclusion of eight independent ink channels. In addition to CMYK, white and clear ink are featured for multiple configurations.

Roland DGA Corporation’s newest printer, the SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640, was the showpiece of the company’s booth. The new device is built for production printing with a dual inline and mirrored printhead configuration that yields image quality at a maximum print speed of 528 square feet per hour. Print speeds for white and metallic inks are more than 50 percent faster than those of previous models.

Notable vendors also received accolades from digital imaging professionals in the SGIA Product of the Year awards. Hewlett-Packard picked up the digital inks category with its latex ink. Dreamscape won media – vinyl with its Silver Flash. Pacific Coast Fabrics received best media – textile thanks to its Deko-Green 7058RCFLBS product. Mutoh America, Inc. was honored with two awards, in the poster size – solvent/latex printer under 96 inches category for its ValueJet 1638 and in the grand format roll-to-roll solvent/latex printer category with its ValueJet 2638.

With record numbers, this year’s trade show was a great success. 38 percent of all attendees were newcomers, illustrating the growth opportunities in our industry.

We hope to see you at next year’s SGIA, co-located with IFAI, in Orlando, FL October 23 to 25, 2012.
