SGIA 2011 Preview
Head down to New Orleans, LA October 19 to 21, 2011 for the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association’s (SGIA’s) annual expo. Network with peers, visit booths showcasing the newest products in the graphic arts, attend educational seminars, and visit SGIA’s popular expert advice areas. This year the organization added the narrow format zone to cater to those interested in OEM markings, labels, small point of purchase components, and nameplates. 3A Composites USA, booth 2311, displays Omni-Flute graphic display boards. The company recently introduced five new colors of fluted polypropylene sheets—red, dark green, dark blue, light blue, and gray. There are now a total of nine color choices in the Omni-Flute line. Omni-Flute was introduced in 2010 for creating cost-effective short-term signage and point of purchase displays. It is produced with the latest technology and equipment and is engineered specifically for graphic display applications. Omni-Flute is geometrically square and color consistent. It features a smooth, treated surface that accepts direct digital printing and screenprinting applications as well as paint.
Advantage Sign Supply, booth 2325, offers special show pricing for signmaking equipment and supplies from manufacturers including 3M, Avery, Epson, Gerber, GFP, Graphtec, Hewlett-Packard, Mimaki, Mutoh, and Oracal. The supplier provides exceptional customer service, technical support, and training.
Agfa Graphics, booth 935/945, designs products customers can grow with. The :Jeti 3020 Titan is a field-upgradeable, high-production, high-resolution hybrid UV inkjet printer designed with a modular format. The entry-level version incorporates 16 Ricoh Gen 4 greyscale printheads resulting in fast, high-quality CMYK output at a resolution of 600 dpi, and up to 1,200 dpi for photorealistic image quality. It can be configured with up to 48 printheads for a maximum print speed of 2,432 square feet per hour. The Titan features a flat-to-roll option as well.
Anderson DPC, graphic print division, Anderson America Corporation, booth 2701, exhibits its Cojet Flatbed Hybrid Inkjet Printer and High Performance Akut cutting system.
Asphalt Art, booth 144, introduces patented, aluminum foil-based non-slip media for concrete, asphalt, pavers, and stairs. The product is ideal for sporting events, parades, stadium graphics, retail advertising, and parking lot campaigns. A glass bead, non-slip top coat makes the product ASTM D-2047 and National Floor Safety Institute certified and no lamination is required. Asphalt Art is compatible with UV-curable and latex inks. Printed graphics last up to one year.
Aurora Specialty Textiles Group, Inc., booth 1832, showcases an eco-friendly booth design that incorporates its Act II FR fabric, made from 100 percent recycled polyester and part of the Weaves of Green eco-friendly collection. The company’s Northern Lights Printable Textiles line expands with the addition of White Black White FR and Triple White FR fabrics. Both fabrics feature a triple-layered construction, are made of 100 percent polyester, and treated to meet NFPA 701 standards. A blockout middle layer makes the White Black White fabric 100 percent opaque, while the Triple White fabric has no pinholes and great light diffusion properties for backlit or frontlit applications.
Caldera, booth 635, launches a digital signage solution with variable content, Variable Display. It provides a digital signage solution for wide format digital printing providers. Variable Display is easily combined with digital printing jobs for point of sale material, retail signage, and events. This solution combines the qualities of both visual print communication and dynamic content, thereby connecting two advertising universes that are usually treated separately or as competitors.
Catalina Graphic Films, booth 2419, features Mojave Media for digital applications including wall graphics and window graphic films, which are used by fast food restaurant chains for point of purchase advertising. Other products include a full line of pressure-sensitive vinyl, polyester, acetate, metalized film, overlaminating film, barrier film, Walk-On-Graphics, and digital media. The company also offers the CV 300 Series, a high-gloss calendared vinyl available in over 30 colors for the computer signmaking industry.
Clear Focus Imaging, Inc., booth 1655, highlights three new products including PVSee, the company’s first unperforated, pressure-sensitive gloss clear vinyl; DecoVue, a perforated, pressure-sensitive clear window film; and DuoVue, a non-adhesive, white-on-white perforated film for double-sided printing. PVSee is ideal for point of purchase and retail window posters, especially light box and other backlit applications. DecoVue is designed for architectural and decorative window enhancements and clear partitions where a softer, translucent effect is desired. DuoVue can be attached to windows or used as a hanging banner in retail environments. The company’s full line of perforated window graphics films and overlaminates are also on display.
DaVinci Technologies, booth 1719, promotes pressure-sensitive vinyl, laminates, universal window perforation, and fine art materials. The company manufactures printhead wipes, swabs, and cleaning fluids compatible with most printers. DaVinci continues to provide exceptional customer service and well-known brands such as ClingZm, conVerd, EcoMedia, MACtac, and PhotoFAB.
DHJ International, booth 635, debuts new print products for solvent, latex, and UV-curable inks. All these products have the added value of being printable on both sides. Under the Decoprint line, also showcased is Pearl textile media for backlit light box displays. Pearl, Bi-Night, and Theatre are offered with OEKO-TEX 100 standard.
DreamScape, booth 759, offers digitally printable textured wallcovering media that adds the extra dimension to custom murals, wall graphics, and interior décor projects. The company displays textured, certified Class A rated commercial grade vinyl wallcoverings for residential and commercial applications in roll widths of 30 to 75 inches and lengths from 75 to 300 feet. For projects requiring LEED credits, choose new Terralon, a PVC-free wallcovering media for solvent, eco-solvent, UV-curable, and latex inks. Terralon is made with over 30 percent recycled materials, is highly breathable, and passes IAQ1350 for low volatile organic compound emissions.
DuPont, booth 2033, provides a LifeCycle Based Solution with Tyvek media for wide format banners, displays, and bags. Tyvek, known for its lightweight strength, outstanding printability, and drapeability, is also recyclable and reusable. Through its Authorized Printer Network and select recycling providers, DuPont provides a method for users to create beautiful in-store campaigns and track recycling efforts—-helping achieve sustainability goals in a marketplace driven by “green” buying decisions.
Durst Image Technology US LLC, booth 901, demonstrates the Durst Rho 1000 continuous UV inkjet printer, which offers a printing speed of up to 5,380 square feet per hour in optimum quality, without interruption. The Rho 1000 provides the highest production efficiency in the market, along with the greatest material flexibility of boards, sheets, and roll media. The Rho 1000 can be integrated into existing production processes and be individually equipped with automatic loading and unloading devices. The printer’s quick set up times and simple, fast media change means users complete multiple customer jobs in a single operation.
EFI, booth 701, displays a full, print-centric product portfolio—from concept to output. EFI VUTEk showcases its latest advancements in superwide format, three-meter UV printing. The GS3250r is an advanced roll-to-roll printer and the GS3250LX is a hybrid printer with LED Cool Cure technology. On display in Hilord’s booth is the TX3250r textile printer. VUTEk also displays the enhanced five-meter GS5000r. In addition, EFI Rastek features two UV wide format printers—the new three-meter roll-to-roll R3200 and the 65-inch hybrid H652. EFI also showcases EFI Pace, a browser-based print management software system; EFI Digital StoreFront, a Web-to-print solution for print service providers; and Fiery XF, EFI’s RIP software.
EnCore Products, booth 319, features Rigid MightyCore, MightyPrint Expressions, and the newest addition to the EnCore Foam Board line, Premium Tac, a high-performance repositionable, pressure-sensitive foamboard. This peel-and-stick, pH-neutral foamboard features superior tacky-ness that lasts longer than traditional rubber-based adhesives making it more versatile for repositioning and adjustment when mounting work. Premium Tac is available in a variety of sizes.
Epson, booth 1201, exhibits the latest signage printing solutions with its Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 solvent printer. In addition to the GS Poster Paper Gloss introduced at SGIA in 2010, Epson debuts two new papers designed for signage applications. GS DisplayTrans Backlight Film is a high-resolution backlight film designed for professional solvent backlight display or daylight signage graphic applications. Signature Worthy GS Canvas Satin is a premium-quality canvas with the same coating utilized on GS Canvas Gloss, but with a satin finish.
Estimator Corp., booth 104, demonstrates estimating and workflow software for offset and wide format. The product offers safe and affordable remote five user hosting for only $99.95 a month. It is easy to learn and use with single-screen mistake-proof software. Unique features include auto-press select, built-in job costing, auto layout and best-press utilization, and a QuickBooks link.
Fisher Textiles, booth 1509, introduces its newest fabrics for digital printing including GF 3155 Diamond Mesh for apparel, home furnishings, and trade show applications; GF 901 Glossy Canvas for fine art reproductions, wall murals, and up-scale retail signage; SI 310 Paper Backed Flag; DD 1500 Dacron for flags and banners; DD 7299 Poplin for trade show exhibits and pop-up booths; DD 7860 Heavy Duck for roll up banner stands and photographic backdrops; and Crazy 8 and Crazy Cloth for custom billiard and gaming tables.
Foster Keencut, booth 718, specializes in precision cutting machines for the sign, digital graphic, printing, photographic, and screen graphics industries. The SteelTraK vertical sheet material cutter is capable of cutting five millimeter aluminum composite and half-inch PVC board. New in 2011 is the Evolution-E2 precision cutter, which is an integrated wide format cutting system featuring a bi-directional cutting head, which is accurate to within .008 inches.
Fredrix Print Canvas, booth 2210, features 901RG Regent, the premier product of its aqueous canvas line offering a high gloss finish with the best results for d-max, color volume, and resolution. The glossy coating allows for printing with both pigment and dye-based inks. It is a true universal canvas ideal for photographic and fine art reproduction.
Fujifilm, booth 425, presents the new Inca Onset S40 high-quality, high-speed UV flatbed inkjet printer capable of producing up to 94 full-sized 63x123.6-inch high-quality prints per hour; the new Uvistar2 UV roll printer featuring a new Parallel Drop Size technology, which improves print quality without sacrificing speed; the Acuity Advance HS UV flatbed printer offering photographic quality at exceptional speeds; and the new Acuity LED eight-color 64-inch wide format inkjet LED UV printer for roll-to-roll and rigid medias, featuring a patent-pending LED lamp design that allows printing of white ink in a single pass.

Graphics One, booth 3201, exhibits the first tabloid LED printer designed for t-shirt transfers using Oki’s high-definition white toner. The Oki proColor 920 WHT printer is a powerful and ultra high-speed LED printer that images over 22 page per minute or 1,320 pages per hour for 12x18-inch prints. Priced at a value of $7,495, Oki’s proColor 920 WHT printer is perfect for transferring onto textile garments both white and dark.
Hewlett-Packard (HP), booth 919, highlights its expanded portfolio of large format printing solutions, including the 126-inch HP Scitex LX850 printer, HP’s newest Latex Ink solution, which boasts multiple workflow features and double-sided printing capabilities delivered at true production speeds. Also on display, the 60-inch HP Designjet L25500 printer produces durable outdoor and indoor applications while providing high-resolution image quality—up to 1,200 dpi. From its UV-curable portfolio, HP demonstrates its 98-inch HP Scitex FB700 printer that loads up to six sheets simultaneously, boosting capacity and productivity.
Innova Art Ltd., booth 1558, delivers specialty papers for digital photography, art, and décor markets. A complete range of cotton, fiber based, and textured paper for inkjet printing; including an eco-solvent Décor Art series, is available in sheets and roll widths up to 60 inches. Additionally, Innova’s patented JetMaster framing system is featured. This easy-assemble, lightweight system allows the user to mount textile, canvas, or paper to a one-piece framing unit creating a dimensional sign or gallery wrap-style finish. Assembly takes about three minutes and is sturdy and produces perfect corners.
InteliCoat Technologies, booth 129, showcases its array of Hewlett-Packard (HP) latex compatible media. As a registered HP latex developer, many of InteliCoat’s Magic and Magiclée media products are qualified using HP Latex Inks with HP Designjet L65500 and L25500 printers, including Magic SBL-7 universal backlit film, POS PRO+ 200 polyester film, VSF Valeron durable polyolefin film, GFCVM poly blend inkjet canvas, and GFPHOTO photorealistic papers.
INX Digital International Co., booth 733, promotes Triangle DTX direct-to-fabric textile inks. Introduced earlier this year to the European marketplace, DTX textile inks are created for and are experiencing much success within the alternative ink channel. The program switch of PVC-based materials and solvent inks towards a “greener” production environment continues to hike interest in these direct-to-textile inks. Designed for use on direct printing with synthetic fabrics using Epson printheads, they deliver optimal quality and a wide color gamut. These inks feature fast drying characteristics on polyesters with minimum 60 percent blends. DTX also displays optimal ink fluidity and an excellent image definition and fastness properties.
KAPCO Graphic Products, booth 656, offers more than 25 vinyl, banner, canvas, and paper media for use with the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Designjet L25500 latex ink printer. The company performed extensive testing to ensure the quality of trade show, promotional, and point of purchase display graphics printed on KAPCO Solvent Media using the HP printer. The media may also work with other latex/UV printers; the company suggests testing for performance and quality assurance.
Lintec of America, booth 426, manufactures pressure-sensitive films specializing in optically clear, textured, scratch-resistant, and frosted inkjet printable window films. Print providers tired of hazy window films that detract from storefront appearance use Lintec WINCOS window films to resemble a direct print to glass look.
MACtac Graphic Products, booth 2211, exhibits new product innovations including DecoArt DecoSatin, a top-coated, pressure-sensitive fabric media designed for wide format printing of wall graphics and murals. PERMACOLOR DecoLam is a premium laminate film solution for decorate finishes in high-profile applications such as furniture, displays, signage, and promotional items. IMAGin and PERMACOLOR Verde are “green” alternatives to vinyl wide format media and laminates for indoor and outdoor signage.
Master Magnetics, Inc., booth 1427, features the industry’s widest options for wide format printing directly onto flexible magnetic material. PrintMagnetVinyl allows for high-resolution printing directly to flexible magnetic material using solvent, eco-solvent, UV, and latex ink systems. It is ideal for a variety of indoor and outdoor uses such as graphics, point of purchase displays, signage, and vehicle graphics.
Mimaki USA, Inc., booth 745, demonstrates a variety of applications on innovative printers and cutters. The company’s line up includes the new JV34-260 103-inch grand format printer, the compact tabletop UJF-3042 and UJF-3042FX UV LED flatbeds, the UJF-706 UV flatbed for industrial applications, the CJV30 Series that incorporates an integrated print/cut feature, the CGFX Series of roll media cutters, and the CF2 flatbed cutting plotter.
MultiCam Inc., booth 1845, debuts the versatile MultiCam High-Speed Digital Express, one of the fastest CNC production machines on the market. It’s an affordable, configurable system for high-speed digital finishing at speeds of up to 7,000 inches per minute. A wide format, sheet fed, or conveyorized cutting platform, Digital Express combines high-speed MultiVision digital registration with powerful routing and multiple knife-cutting capabilities. Mutoh America, Inc., booth 2133, showcases its newest ValueJets. The new VJ1624-64" and VJ1324-54" print at speeds of up to 313 square feet per hour and come standard with the i²: Intelligent Interweave print technique that eliminates banding. Equip either printer with the SpectroVue VM-10 spectrophotometer to use Mutoh’s free ColorVerify process control system. ColorVerify demonstrations occur daily at Mutoh’s booth.
Nazdar, booth 609, presents its newest digital ink products—Lyson TX650 dye-sublimation, Lyson 7470 designed for fluted polypropylene, Lyson 910 for the Hewlett-Packard Designjet 9000, and Lyson 213 for the Roland DGA Corporation AJ-740i/1000i. Océ North America, a Canon Group Company, booth 1519, demonstrates the new Océ Arizona 360 GT UV flatbed printer, which features enhancements over previous models that enable customers to increase productivity and application versatility and open doors to technical and industrial applications. The printer offers the standard table size of 49x98.4 inches and an Express Mode print speed of up to 377 square feet per hour, ideal for banner and outdoor work. A new High Definition print mode delivers fine feature reproduction including the ability to print text as small as two points, enabling print providers to offer high-margin technical and industrial applications such as printing on lenticular lenses and membrane panels.

In addition to its advanced air-release liner system, this versatile 4-mil, five year film is perfect for flat indoor and outdoor short- to medium-term applications. Panel Processing, booth 310, provides Eco-Finish Rigid Print Media. 100 percent biodegradable, Eco-Finish is a specially formulated coating that provides a crisp, vibrant, consistently bright white surface for high-definition digital printing. It is ideal for indoor signage, in-store marketing, and anything that requires a smooth white printable surface. Eco-Finish is available in three finish levels with a wide range of thicknesses.
R Tape, booth 1809, launches SEF heat transfer materials used to decorate t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, and caps. The SEF line includes polyurethane and flock materials for plotter cutting and printing. Plotter cut materials are available in a wide assortment of colors. To transfer printable polyurethane and flock materials, R Tape introduces three special HotMask products. HM300—a low-tack polyester film, and HM350—a medium-tack film, are used to transfer printed heat transfer graphics. To transfer printed flock graphics use higher tack HM375.
Ritrama, booth 2633, carries media to wrap vehicles or renovate interior decorative designs. Wrap self-adhesive materials designed by the company transform cars, interiors, and an image. At Ritrama’s booth, a hands on decorating school educates users on the proper techniques to wrap a car and apply graphics to walls and windows.
Roland DGA Corporation, booth 1945, introduces two VersaUV LED flatbed inkjet printers, allowing shops to explore new applications, from wide format signs and packaging prototypes to specialty graphics, interior décor, custom awards, personalization, and promotional items.
