Wallcovering Media Products

By Melissa Donovan

Part 2 of 3

There are a variety of media products on the market today—from vinyl to fabric and magnetics—that are applicable to wallcovering applications. Included below are companies’ popular offerings.

3M Graphics Market Center promotes its 3M Scotchcal Graphic Film for Textured Surfaces IJ8624 in response to the growing trends of digitally printed media used on textured surfaces. It is a 2-mil removable graphic film designed for solvent piezo inkjet printing. When heated and applied with 3M’s application tools and techniques, the film conforms to moderately textured surfaces, both flat and curved, including concrete block, brick, industrial stucco, and tile-like surfaces commonly found in arenas, stadiums, restaurants, and retail.

Arlon Graphics, LLC designs media for heavily textured surfaces, such as its DPF 6700 2-mil cast wall wrap material. It conforms to irregular shapes and adheres permanently to stucco, concrete, and brick. Short-term media, such as DPF 8000 is also available. It is thicker and calendered, which makes removal easier. Both films are compatible with solvent, UV, and latex printers.

Avery Dennison Graphics recommends its MPI 1005 Supercast Easy Apply RS vinyl for wallcovering projects. It is a 2.1-mil premium gloss white opaque film. Avery’s Easy Apply RS Technology offers the benefits of reduced wrinkling and air entrapment inherent in the application of graphics, as well as repositionability and slideability for exact positioning.

Big Systems LLC manufactures SeraMark removable adhesive wall fabric. Users can print to full bleed when using this product and the final graphic is easy to cut and weed. No edge curl, superior cling, and no residue left after removal are key selling points. Also, the product is eco-friendly, being phthalate-free. It is priced at about $.78 per square foot.

DreamScape offers commercial-strength printable wallcovering media from its original line of fabric-based products, as well as peel-and-stick wall media, referred to as WallWrap. The WallWrap product runs about $.95 per square foot. Repositionable, it is available in three texture, and is PSA fire retardant. The company also offers Terralon, a PVC-free recyclable wallcovering made up of 31 percent post-consumer products.

General Formulations Inc.’s WallMark Concept 226 product is for temporary application of graphics to most painted interior walls and windows. It is a 6-mil premium white matte semi-rigid calendered acrylic removable pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed vinyl film. Its maximum roll width is 54 inches.

Hewlett-Packard’s (HP’s) PVC-free Wall Paper was recently enhanced to become FSC- and GREENGUARD-certified when printed with HP Latex Inks. It offers an odor-free alternative to PVC materials and is pre-pasted for easy application and removal with only water and a sponge. It is ideal for use in homes, schools, restaurants, and retail stores. Currently, the product offers a list price of $.43 per square foot.

KoroGraphics, a division of RJF International Corp., is known for its durable, commercial-grade high-end fabric-based digitally printable wallcovering products. Products are formulated and tested under ASTM E84, NFPA 286, and CAN S102M to comply with local, state, and federal building and fire codes including but not limited to NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and the International Building Code. They range anywhere between $.40 to .50 per square foot.

MACtac Graphic Products includes media options for wallcoverings ranging from architectural, retail, to home décor with products such as the IMAGin RoughRAP PVC film for textured wall surfaces or extended durability products such as IMAGin B-free PRO. For retail wall graphics, IMAGin wallNOODLE is ideal for its easy positionability and removability.

Oracal USA promotes ORAJET 3551RA High Performance Inkjet Media with RapidAir Technology as an ideal film for wallcovering projects. It features an advanced air-release liner and a solvent-based, grey-pigmented repositionable adhesive to make smooth application a breeze. This seven year, 2.75-mil film features a smooth, bright, ultra-glossy surface to produce prints that remove with little or no adhesive residue for up to four years.

Ritrama Inc. recently launched the Ultimate Wall Action wall graphics product. It is a 5-mil semi-rigid film with an ultra-low peel microsphere removable adhesive for temporary applications. This wall graphic media is designed for dry, flat wall painted applications and it is compatible with a variety of printing methods such as solvent, eco-solvent, and UV. Ultimate Wall Action is available in 54-inch rolls.

Ultraflex Systems, Inc. provides Wallscapes III—durable and flexible materials for UV and solvent printing. Wallscapes wallcovering is installed using most commercial types of adhesives or sewn or grommeted. It meets ASTM E-84-03 standards for Class A, Type II wallcovering. Ultraflex stocks three embossments; suede, stardust, and matte with other embossments available by special order. Wallscapes are available in 54-inch by 300-foot rolls.

Verseidag seemee US Inc.’s Insight products are popular options for wallcoverings. Both Insight Light and Heavy canvas are 100 percent polyester, with acrylic coating. They are qualified under the NFPA 701 fire rating certification. Roll widths of 63, 126, and 196 inches are available.

Visual Magnetics LP offers the Visual Magnetics Graphic System. It includes MagnaMedia magnetic-receptive papers and films and InvisiLock magnet technology, which may be applied to any surface or mounted directly to a wall. Visual Magnetics’ MagnaMedia is a thin material so that when combined with the properties of the InvisiLock Magnetic, it is possible to create layered graphics to update or add wallcovering images instantly. The InvisiLock magnet retails for $126.96 from Drytac Corporation.
