ISA International Sign Expo

A Preview of the Spring Show

April 2010 brings us the ISA International Sign Expo, held by the International Sign Association (ISA) at the Orlando County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Held April 8 to 10, the event hosts nearly 1,600 exhibit booths. Educational and networking events begin on April 7. Below are just a few of the players in the graphic arts space highlighting new products and promoting customer favorites. Read about more vendors in the April issue of Digital Output. Also, both this issue and April will be at show, use it to reference booth numbers and more!

3M Graphics Market Center, booth 2062, showcases several environmentally preferred products. 3M Wall Decorating Film IJ86E is a 6-mil, polyolefin film that prints well, applies easily, and stays in place, yet is removed cleanly with virtually no adhesive residue—making it a solid choice for point of purchase (POP) graphics. Attendees can also stop by 3M’s booth to see a demonstration of their deep channel and severe curve solution, 3M Controltac Wrap Film with Comply v3 Adhesive IJ380Cv3 and 3M Scotchcal Gloss Overlaminate 8580.

Advanced Greig Laminators, Inc., booth 1524, displays the Encore series laminator, designed with several unique features to cost-effectively produce graphics. The company also introduces the Print-Rite line of adhesive-backed vinyl media. Company representatives are on hand to review the complete line of Cover-Rite overlaminating films, Mount-Smart mounting adhesives, Shadow-Block backing films, and much more.

Alcan Composites USA, booth 2414, exhibits new Profiles aluminum extrusions, which join substrates such as Dibond and Sintra and provide a finished edge to display pieces. The profiles are available in three shapes—U-shaped, designed to frame and enclose an otherwise exposed edge while providing additional rigidity in finished displays; L-shaped, joins two substrates in a 90-degree corner connection with reduced fabrication costs; and H-shaped, joins two substrates in a flat or side-by-side connection, allowing for the creation of longer displays without custom-sized substrates. Profiles are available in 98-inch lengths and feature a Class II anodized finish. INFO# 133

Arlon, booth 2134, features DPF 6000XRP Vinyl Film. It is a 2-mil gloss white cast film with bubble release, tinted, repositionable, permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive. The X-scape system allows for speedy installation while maintaining high enough tack for long-term bond. The adhesive provides excellent opacity; easy installation; and superior conformability around rivets, curves, and contours. DPF 6000XRP is rated for outdoor durability up to seven years unprinted. Bordeaux Digital PrintInk, booth 2634, offers true Mix & Match solutions, which equal no flushing, profiling, or parts replacement when changing from OEM inks. Inks on display include PeNr, a high-quality and economic eco-solvent product; PrMs3, a mild-solvent ink featuring a very low odor level; PrMs33, another mild-solvent ink supported by the Bordeaux Bulk Ink system (BBIS); and PrMs5, a mild-solvent ink. UV-curable inks include Bordeaux’s PLASMA proprietary Mix & Match inks for UV-based printers.

Bowman Displays, booth 2820, manufactures a wide range of backlit and frontlit point of sale display systems, merchandising, and signage. Interior and exterior signage for all needs include light boxes, digital video displays, LED edgelits, aluminum snap frames, banner and trade show systems, and more. The company’s warehouse is complete with in-house manufacturing, laser printing, graphic design, and photography studios, offering a one-stop solution for display concepts.

CET Color, booth 2384, demonstrates the X-Press RK512 roll-to-roll UV printer, the X-Press HK512 Hybrid UV printer, the X-Press FK512 Flatbed UV printer, and the X-Press CNC Router along with its affordable flatbed 100K Print and Cut system. The Xpress RK512 roll-to-roll is available in a 120-inch, eight printhead model, capable of outputting 680 square feet per hour (sf/h). The Xpress FK512, a true six- by ten-foot flatbed printer, is available as a six or 12 printhead model capable of producing 360 and 720 sf/h, respectively. The X-Press HK512 Hybrid features a 72-inch print width and comes in four and six printhead models.

Clear Focus Imaging, Inc., booth 2321, introduces three products, two value-priced perforated window graphic films and a non-printable security/sun control window film. EconoVue features an approximately 60/40 perforation pattern and 1.7-millimeter holes. This 6-mil economy-grade window film features clear removable pressure-sensitive adhesive. Also displayed, the economy-grade version of PosterVue—a 12-mil, non-adhesive window graphics film. The new 7-mil window film has a 65/35 perf pattern and 1.5-millimeter holes, and mounts to the interior or exterior glass surface. SunSecure is an interior-mount, non-printable perforated window film for security enhancement and sun-control applications.

Cooley Group, booth 1314, announces its new Cooley Commercial Graphics program—a network of printing and finishing professionals. In addition, visitors can view Weathertyte Lite, an 11-ounce advanced awning fabric, now with two-sided color. Weathertyte Lite looks and feels like a woven fabric, but offers the protection of an advanced polymer and is waterproof, digitally printable, and heat sealable. Also on display, two new EnviroFlex lightweight seamless billboard products—EnviroFlex PolyFlex 5M Non-PVC and EnviroFlex Lite 7 oz.

DigiFab Systems, booth 842, shows the StampaJet eight-color, high-speed, textile digital printer for high-quality production runs on virtually any textile substrate. The StampaJet uses a new self-cleaning adhesive belt transport system to prevent substrate movement. Also on the show floor, the grand format DigiHeat electrical heat press for heat transferring dye-sublimation (dye-sub) prints to polyester and poly-blend fabrics; the Evolution Textile Design software, a complete turnkey solution for all designing and coloring needs; a large selection of pre-treated fabrics, and DigiDye textile inks to print directly on fabric.

DreamScape, booth 1249, displays Terralon, a PVC-free product with a polyester/natural fiber technology containing over 30 percent recycled materials. Terralon combines Type II durability and a Class A fire rating in a highly breathable, recyclable wallcovering. Complying with CA 1350 air quality standard, the product adds to better air quality with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Also on display, Dreamscape BLING!, a Type II metallic wallcovering with a proprietary silver-colored coating of fine metallic particles.

EskoArtwork, booth 2033, demonstrates design-to-print-to-cut production, including software to build, edit, and nest displays to finishing devices. The Kongsberg XE10 is a fast, productive automated digital finishing system for signs and displays, cutting screened or digitally printed materials up to 35.4x47.2 inches with exceptional quality and low production costs. The Kongsberg XP with i-cut digital finishing system operates continuously in 24/7 production environments—a fast and reliable solution for the short-run production of materials such as corrugated board and plastic, display carton, foamboards, MDF, plywood, acrylics, and Forex.

Estimator Corp., booth 2925, provides unique estimating and print management solutions. Estimator Wide-Format is fully compatible with Windows XP and previous Windows programs as well as Macs. This low-cost solution delivers an email-able quote, order acknowledgement, job tickets, stock and services PO, standard and custom shipping labels for brokers, and reports for tracking, invoicing, and management. Estimator includes setup and installation in two weeks or less and annual releases, updates, and full live maintenance.

Fujifilm Sericol and Fujifilm, booth 2560, holds the Hands-On Media Workshop to display Fujifilm wide format media. Also on display, the Acuity HS UV flatbed printer, which prints at two times the speed of the Acuity Advance model with the same print quality. It is capable of printing up to 16 four- by eight-foot beds per hour. Options include white ink and a roll media feed system. Also on display, the Uvistar UV roll printer, which offers print speeds up to 3,400 sf/h in billboard/banner print mode. Available in 3.5- and 5-meter models, the Uvistar prints on a wide range of media and an optional table is available to print on rigid substrates.

GBC, booth 926, showcases the 4064 wide format thermal laminator. Multiple unwinds and rewinds allow numerous application setups and greater flexibility. The laminator features the GBC Advanced Electrical Safety System, designed to protect the operator when running jobs from either side of the machine. Also on display, the 640t wide format roll-to-roll laminator. It runs cold finishing jobs at speeds up to 16 feet per minute for increased productivity and superior output. Top roller heat assist allows for improved adhesion, reduced silvering, and faster curing times.

GCC, booth 2242, exhibits the StellarJET K72 UV-curable inkjet printer, LaserPro SmartCut X380 laser cutting system, and the Jaguar IV cutting plotters. The 72-inch StellarJET K72UV is equipped with a combination media system, including a conveyer belt and roll-to-roll system. The LaserPro SmartCut X380 is equipped with GSI Spectron 100-watt lasers and features a one year laser tube warranty. With a working area of 38x24 inches, the SmartCut X380 is a large format industrial laser cutting machine suitable for handling small to medium production, an ideal entry-level cutting solution.

Gerber Scientific Products, Inc., booth 2214, displays the Gerber Solara ion, a cationic UV inkjet printer using Gerber Cat Inks and a cold fire cure UV curing process with low energy/temperature. Also on display, the M Series Turbo router automatic print-to-cut finishes a wide spectrum of graphic outputs. It routs aluminum up to .08, and acrylic and wood up to .75 inches. The device cuts, creases, and routs four times faster than the standard M 3000 router.

Hewlett-Packard (HP), booth 2488, features the HP Designjet L25500 printer with HP Latex Printing Technologies. Also on display, the HP Designjet L65500 printer, which produces durable outdoor and indoor applications up to 104 inches while providing high-resolution image quality—up to 1,200 dpi. In addition to the HP Latex Printing Technologies portfolio, the HP Scitex FB7500 printer is also showcased. A versatile UV flatbed printer designed for high-quality POP applications, exhibition graphics, signage, backlit displays, and posters, the HP Scitex FB7500 printer reaches maximum speeds of up to 5,380 sf/h.


Magnum Magnetics
, booth 1645, demonstrates the DigiMag Vinyl magnetic sheet, printing crystal clear images on a wide format solvent inkjet printer. DigiMag Vinyl works with a variety of solvent inkjet printers and is used both indoors and outdoors. Also on the show floor, DigiMag Plus, certified on both the HP Indigo and Kodak NexPress presses. DigiMag Plus is great for creating promotional magnets for customers. It is magnetized post-press.

Mimaki USA, Inc., booth 2182, highlights the new UJF-706, successor to the UJF-605CII; the UJF-3042, a desktop-size UV LED inkjet printer; and the JV5-320DS, specifically outfitted for various textile applications. The UJF-706 prints on non-coated materials up to 150 millimeters thick and uses both hard and flexible UV inks. The UJF-3042 utilizes Mimaki’s UV LED curing technology for broader media choices, faster print speeds, reduced power consumption, and reduced VOCs. The grand format JV5-320DS offers the latest in direct and transfer sublimation textile printing for trade show graphics, banners, flags, POP, and soft signage.

Mitsubishi Plastics Composites America, Inc. (MPCA), booth 2563, introduces four new ACM materials under the umbrella name of GRAPHIC•AL. Lightweight and tough, GRAPHIC•AL LT provides exceptional workability and durability for POP, free-standing displays, kiosks, interior and exterior signage, interior wall panels, billboards, and more. GRAPHIC•AL HP is MPCA’s lightweight and formable high-performance panel with a ten year warranty. GRAPHIC•AL OR is a super lightweight, flat panel material for signage offering the rigidity of a foamed plastic core. GRAPHIC•AL DP is ideal for direct printing with flatbed printers and UV-curable ink.

Nazdar, booth 2734, offers Lyson Series digital inks available in cartridges and bulk containers. They are Plug & Play and covered by a comprehensive warranty. Application specialists are available to review options and address questions on a wide range of products from 3M, Aurora Specialty Textiles, EFI VUTEk, Epson, ImageStar Digital Media, MACtac, Mutoh, Roland, Splash of Color, Teckwin, and Ultraflex. Meet with expert Color Technicians to learn about color management software, G7 print techniques, and on-site assessments to increase profitability.

Oce North America, booth 1022, debuts the Oce Arizona 550 GT UV flatbed printer. Designed as a true flatbed system, it prints on a wide variety of rigid substrates up to 49.2 by 98.4 inches in area, and up to two inches thick. It features a production print mode of up to 433 sf/h on rigid media without sacrificing print quality. This enables users to print nearly 100 four- by eight-foot boards in a single eight-hour shift. An available White Ink Option allows for under-printing for non-white media or objects, over-printing for backlit applications on transparent media, and printing white as a spot color.

ONYX Graphics Inc., booth 2614, offers PrepEdge Pro, a job preparation tool designed specifically for large format workflow. ONYX PrepEdge Pro software reduces job preparation time and media waste, and increases throughput and productivity for large format print service providers in the prepress stage of printing workflow. ONYX Imagez software is a basic, affordable RIP package designed for large format aqueous and entry-level solvent inkjet printers. It is ideally suited to single-person and in-house users that want professional print results while maintaining complete control over print operations.

Palram Americas, booth 2460, shows PALGLAS flat extruded acrylic sheets, designed for indoor and outdoor applications; PALIGHT Premium, a versatile, flexible, lightweight, and durable foamed PVC substrate ideal for use for digital or screenprinting; PALIGHT GPS, a general purpose foamed PVC substrate for construction, display, and lamination applications; and PALSUN flat polycarbonate sheets, which offer the transparency of glass at less than half the weight.

Pregis Corporation, booth 2940, unveils Falconboard Build and Falconboard Mount. Falconboard is a 100 percent paper-based graphic display board made from renewable resources. Produced chlorofluorocarbon-free, it emits zero VOCs during manufacturing. Users print directly onto Falconboard. The lightweight display board accommodates most inks and adhesives and is heat resistant up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

R Tape Corporation, booth 1047, highlights Claritex polycarbonate films, VinylEfx printable metalized vinyl films, and Eclypse Patterned Overlaminates. Claritex polycarbonate films are used in conjunction with eco-solvent and UV-curable printers. VinylEfx metalized vinyl media are printable films that attract attention. Eclypse Patterned Overlaminates are available in five textures—Diamond Plate, Carbon Fibre, Frost, Glitter, and Linen.

Roland DGA Corporation, booth 1634, invites attendees to discover the power of metallic inkjet printing. Fully optimized for white and metallic silver ECO-SOL MAX inks, the 64-inch VersaCAMM VS-640 features integrated printing and contour cutting capabilities all in one device. Featuring Roland Intelligent Pass Control technology for superior imaging in every print mode, the VS-640 supports a wide range of coated and uncoated media. The VS-640 comes with Roland’s patent-pending automated ink circulation system, an optional media take-up system, and VersaWorks RIP software featuring the Roland Color System for precision spot color matching.

Sawgrass Technologies, booth 1744, exhibits SubliM and SubliM Direct sublimation inks and M Ink, an aqueous pigment ink. SubliM Direct prints on polyester and nylon. Sawgrass also features M Ink for cotton and other digitally prepared fabrics. Boasting three year outdoor durability, M Ink provides extreme color vibrancy, superior runability for maximum productivity, and minimum maintenance. At the Sawgrass booth, consultants are on hand to discuss whole product solutions—turnkey systems that bring together the elements that influence the entire production process.

Splash of Color, booth 1754, displays the HeatWave DFP-64 direct-to-fabric printer affordably priced at $59,995. The complete solution prints directly onto polyester fabrics and other substrates. Easily print flags, banners, textiles, and soft signage with minimal employee oversight. The system features a cork-covered cylinder to enable printing on stretchable fabrics such as Lycra, Spandex, and other sports textiles. Also featured, the BannerPRO Professional Banner Hemming System.

Tex Visions, booth 2972, specializes in custom printing and display hardware. The company supplies customers with flags, banners, umbrellas, and displays. Exclusive solutions include Bowflag, Q-Frame, and T-Pole. Stop by the booth and see an array of products for both indoor and outdoor campaigns.

Ultraflex Systems, Inc., booth 2326, showcases media such as Strip Mesh Plus, lined with a backer to catch ink up to three meters and UltraMesh Plus, an unlined version up to five meters. The booth also features DSS, a double-sided smooth blockout banner material ideal for banner stands; Ultraflex’s popular JetFlex; as well as its more economical, wide format 13-ounce version called SuperPrint Plus. Ultraflex also showcases its textile line including earth-friendly textiles.

Wasatch Computer Technology, LLC, booth 1262, highlights its SoftRIP software. With simple set up, intuitive workflow, and powerful printing controls, SoftRIP saves time and money. Wasatch SoftRIP Version 6.6 features the new Wasatch Tracer, which allows users to create contour cut paths or generate white ink plates directly within SoftRIP.
