ISA International Sign Expo

A Preview of the April Show

The ISA International Sign Expo, held in Las Vegas, NV from April 15 to 18, 2009 promises to educate and stimulate professional sign manufacturers from around the world. 2008’s event hosted 3,723 individuals from 111 countries, a number expected to increase this year. Educational and networking events are slated to start April 15. The exhibit hall opens April 16 at 9:30 a.m. The following is a brief summary of some of the exhibitors, stop by booth 4348 and visit Digital Output.

3P InkJet Textiles Corporation, booth 4946, presents Value Premium Flag FR. The matte finished product produces deeply saturated, high definition prints when created with dye-sublimation (dye-sub) direct or transfer inks. It passes flame retardant tests, making it well suited for indoor banners and advertisements, point of purchase (POP) displays, and trade show graphics. The weatherproof solution offers outdoor durability. The Value line is 100 percent recyclable and contains no harmful substances.

Agfa Graphics, booth 3953, demonstrates new additions to the :Anapurna family of UV inkjet solutions. These digital solutions produce posters, banners, signage, displays, labels, and more. Plus, the company’s experience in imaging and color technology provides the expertise required for an assortment of high-quality UV inks.

Arlon, Inc., booth 3112, features DPF 8000, a 3.8-mil satin white engineered vinyl. It is used for low energy surfaces such as brick walls, concrete surfaces, and wall murals with aggressive, high tack, permanent adhesive. DPF 8000’s superior scratch resistance and outdoor durability is guaranteed for up to seven years.

Aurora Specialty Textiles Group, Inc., booth 3560, introduces two new textiles for UV and dye-sub transfer printing. Replay II, the second addition to the Weaves of Green line of recycled polyester fabrics, is a lightweight 4.5-ounce plain weave with a bright white finish. It is available in 60- and 120-inch widths by 100 yards with or without fire retardant treatment. The second new addition is Premium Poplin FR, a tightly woven 5.8-ounce polyester fabric also available in 60 and 120 inches.

Avery Graphics, booth 2511, showcases MPI 2611 Wall Film—formerly MPI 2601 Wall Film, a calendered film with removable adhesive for digitally printed wall graphic applications. Recommended for most walls, its luster finish delivers excellent printability with most solvent, eco-solvent, and UV-curable inks. MPI 2611 is ideal for wall murals, consumer wall decoration, retail, and POP wall signage and is safe for use with most paints.

Bordeaux Digital PrintInk Ltd., booths 4956 and 4958, highlights the company’s Mix & Match philosophy—the replacement of either individual or all OEM cartridges with no flushing or profiling. New products include PRIME PrLs, PRIME PrSe, and PLASMA PIFx. Current ink products include PRIME ECO PeNr, PRIME PrS2, PRIME Ps21, and PRIME-GREEN PgNr—hazardous air, pollutant-free organic inks.

Caldera Graphics, booth 3350, features Flow+. From quote to invoice, while managing the production process, inventory analysis and planning, automation, outsourcing, delivery notes, financial statistics, and accounting synchronization, Flow+ is a complete wide format business workflow solution. It is the first workflow software that interacts directly with a RIP spooler.

Clear Focus Imaging, Inc., booth 4664, displays a range of the company’s media products. PosterVue is a perforated non-adhesive One Way Vision film for retail and commercial see-through window graphics. 12-mil thick, it is easy to reposition, remove, and reuse and is available in 54-inch by 100- and 1,000-foot rolls. ReflectVue is a perforated, pressure-sensitive retro-reflective One Way Vision film available in 48-inch by 100- and 1,000-foot rolls. PerfxCoat is an optically clear protective coating designed for use with perforated window graphics. At 0.2-mil thick it does not increase the weight or thickness of the graphic.

conVerd LLC, booth 2508, exhibits conVerd by Aconda, the first paper product line that is both FSC and Carbon Neutral certified in the wide and superwide markets. The line includes a range of products for indoor and outdoor applications including a flame retardant board; a moisture resistant board alternative to traditional foamboard and corrugated plastic boards; a 100 percent opaque, grommetable banner and sign material; and backlit poster paper. Also on display, the UJET MC3-Premium textile printer with drop on demand dual micro piezo printheads and variable dot technology, which offers output at 108 square feet per hour (sf/h).

Cooley Sign & Digital Products, booth 3121, presents Weathertyte Advanced Awning Fabric, a 16-ounce product with an eight year warranty. New Weathertyte Lite is an 11-ounce fabric and like Weathertyte is digitally printable, allowing for custom decoration of awnings for retail and mixed-use applications. Weathertyte and Weathertyte Lite are UV, fungus, and flame resistant and meet the requirements of NFPA701 and CA Fire Marshall. Also on display, the EnviroFlex line of lightweight and recyclable digital printing products.161

Corel Corporation, booth 5343, Digital Art Solutions’ booth, highlights the new CorelDRAW Anniversary Edition bundle, which includes CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4, the Wacom Intuos3 pen tablet, and new Corel Painter Sketch Pad in one complete package. The full edition is $529 and upgrades are $299.

Cyrious Software, booth 5337, provides Control OOB, an integrated estimating and business management system that allows users to easily generate estimates, work orders, service tickets and invoices, as well as track and schedule jobs, manage customers and employees, track inventory, manage production, and much more. Control also provides professional sales reports, an activity manager, and unique marketing tools to accelerate business growth. The company recently released Cyrious Control OOB with powerful new features specifically for electric shops.

Daige, Inc., booth 4019, offers the Quikmount 4, an affordable cold laminator for laminating or mounting small or large prints. Built from steel and aluminum, it is available in 25-, 38-, 55-, and 65-inch widths. Features found on the device include automatic take up, a heavy duty motor, and silicone covered rollers. Also on display, the EZ Glide liquid laminator.

DHJ International, booth 3350, launches Acqua’print, a coated polyester media for inkjet printing machines from d.gen, DuPont, Gandinnovations, Mimaki, and Mutoh. Four new products target direct to print and dye-sub applications—Acquasun, used for backlit applications; Acquanight, a general purpose blackout fabric; Acquadrop, a non-curl canvas; and Acquatex, a new twill weave textile effect. The products offer no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), come in rolls up to 122 inches wide, and are applicable to global fire retardant standards.

DigiFab Systems, booth 3948, demonstrates StampaJet, an eight color, high-speed, textile digital printer. The StampaJet uses a new self-cleaning adhesive belt transport system that prevents even the smallest movement of the substrate—ensuring perfect registration with any kind of fabric, from woven to stretch to sheer. DigiFab’s StampaJet features extra wide, variable dot Epson printheads, with 1,440 nozzles per printhead. A laser device checks on-the-fly nozzle efficiency and prevents any print faults that may occur.

DreamScape, booth 1021, features DreamScape Textured Wall Wrap, an adhesive backed, printable wallcovering compatible with solvent, eco-solvent, and UV-curable printers. This product is available in three textures and recommended for short to mid-term applications where graphics are changed frequently. DreamGuard Protex3 is a water-based liquid topcoat available in three finishes—satin, matte, and gloss.

Drytac Corporation, booth 310, debuts the DES-4Foam edge finishing solution. It revolutionizes how to machine finish the edges of popular print and mount boards with board thicknesses ranging from three sixteenths of an inch to one and three quarter inches and can be finished in a variety of colors. The machine has many unique features such as independent pressure and numerical indicators to monitor the boards and special proprietary adhesive glue developed by Drytac.

DuPont Nonwovens - Graphics Business, booth 3944, showcases recyclable DuPont Tyvek Vivia, an environmentally friendly solution for wide format printing. The media can be recycled at various centers. Tyvek Vivia features a soft, fabric-like drape and low memory, avoiding creases, curls, and wrinkles. Similar to DuPont Tyvek print media, it offers tear, puncture, weather, and fade resistance. It is available in rolls up to 116 inches wide.

Durst Technology US LLC, booth 5132, demonstrates the Rho 320R, a 126-inch wide UV inkjet roll printer built with precision components, such as Quadro Array printhead technology producing at print speeds up to 1,440 sf/h. Other features include VOC and odor-free Rho Roll ink, with an option for printing two rolls side-by-side and another for perfectly registered double-sided printing. A high-quality white printing option, light color option, and enhanced user software with an integrated maintenance program further support this new quality standard.

EcoMedia, Inc., booth 3768, offers polyethylene films, which are recyclable and biodegradable. EcoMedia’s line of printable materials is available for UV printing only. Products are available in banner, backlit, and blockout options. Custom widths up to 84 inches are available.


EFI VUTEk,
booth 4548, launches the VUTEk GS3200 and GS5000r printers for the first time in North America. The GS3200 produces photorealistic graphics in eight color plus white at speeds up to 1,200 sf/h. In four color plus white mode speeds of up to 2,400 sf/h are achievable. A hybrid, it can change from flatbed to roll-to-roll in under a minute. The GS5000r prints in eight color mode at speeds of 1,600 sf/h. It is designed for mid- to high-volume print service providers looking to grow their business.

Epson, booth 1305, showcases the Epson Stylus Pro GS6000, a commercial outdoor printer with Epson UltraChrome GS ink. With Epson UltraChrome GS ink, the Stylus Pro GS6000 produces a wide color gamut on nearly any solvent-based media. Epson UltraChrome GS ink allows commercial sign makers to integrate safer signage printing technology without sacrificing output quality. It delivers virtually odorless printing without the need for special ventilation or air purification systems. The ink does not contain nickel compounds, minimizing the harmful impact on the environment and employees.

EstiMate Software, booth 4265, unveils EstiMate Everything, part of EstiMate Software’s new Freedom program. EstiMate Everything offers all the same tools as the original EstiMate product, including pricing plug-ins, for an affordable monthly price. New features include a vehicle wrap plug-in. In addition, EstiMate’s Hourly Rate Worksheet builds the cost of a pay-as-you-go plan into a sign shop’s rate, effectively creating a free management solution.

Fisher Textiles, booth 5138, introduces Digital Apparel for dye-sub printing. The line consists of several jersey and mesh fabrics with a moisture management chemical for wicking. These fabrics are ideal for athletic wear, especially cycle wear. Fisher also added two fabrics to its Enviro-Tex “green” fabric line—ET 9496 Heavy Knit and ET 9412 Flag. Certification is available for both of these fabrics. Other new products include SI 4418 Blockout, a solvent and UV printable fabric and Silver Flag Liner, lightweight and fully opaque with a double-sided acrylic coating.

General Binding Corporation (GBC), booth 4715, features applications using GBC Arctic UV Cast Sand for durable outdoor graphics. Wide format laminators Orca 4064WF and 1064WF are displayed in the booth. Also shown, GBC Magnetic Stock, an ultra-thin, flexible magnetic material with a thickness of 15-mil. This product is recommended for POP displays, retail signage, and trade show graphics.

Graphic Materials International (GMI), booth 3519, displays Mojave Digital Media, used for vehicle wrap graphics, window graphics, wall graphics, and floor decals. Within this family of solvent print media are backlit, magnetics, reflectives, translucents, banner media, and other conventional vinyl for POP displays, exhibits, decals, and recommended overlaminates. Water-based adhesives allow the Mojave Digital Media brand to be used with eco-solvent, solvent, and UV-based inkjet printers. Mojave Digital Media is available in standard length rolls or flatbed sheet sizes.

Hexis USA, booth 5174, presents the company’s complete Air Release Technology range. This includes HX100WG White Cast and HX200WG White Polymeric Calendered with HX20000 Color Cast. The HX100WG and XH200WG are specifically engineered for full vehicle wraps and markings on complex surfaces.

i-cut, inc., booth 3966, formerly Mikkelsen Graphic Engineering and now a separate EskoArtwork operating subsidiary, demonstrates OEM integration with its i-cut Vision software. The new i-cut 7.0 Vision software takes print material specifications from the work stream, including cutting keys and blade recommendations. It has a new streamlined user interface and is compatible with Microsoft Vista.

KAPCO Graphic Products, booth 1705, displays white and clear mounting films with permanent water-based adhesive. Also on the show floor, media for indoor and outdoor signage, promotional and POP graphics, and trade show displays. Media such as PSA 3-mil Gloss White Vinyl, PSA 3.2-mil Gloss and Matte Clear Vinyl, PSA 6-mil Matte White Vinyl, and EconoVue 60/40 Window Film is compatible with OEM and mild-solvent inks.

Mimaki USA, Inc., booth 4532, highlights the CJV30 Series, an integrated print/cut system. This printer is available in 24-, 40-, 54-, and 64-inch widths for a wide variety of applications. Also on display, the UJV-160, a roll-to-roll large format UV-curable inkjet printer. It comes with a standard flatbed attachment for printing on rigid materials. In addition, Mimaki announces Eco-HS1 an environmentally friendly solvent ink. It features an expanded color gamut while reducing media shrinkage from solvent migration.

Mutoh America, Inc., booth 3301, hosts live vehicle wrap demonstrations daily by Todd LaBrie, president/CEO, Carwraps and Justin Pate, a graphic installer. Also shown, the entire ValueJet product line. The ValueJet 1614-64” printer is a 64-inch device printing at speeds up to 145 sf/h in production mode. The ValueJet 1614 printer uses Mutoh’s Eco-Ultra Inks, which require no ventilation. The roll-to-roll ValueJet 1618-64” reaches speeds up to 334 sf/h in production mode. The ValueJet 1608-64” Hybrid is an environmentally friendly printer solution using Mubio ink.

Nazdar, booth 4953, offers a wide range of solvent, aqueous, and UV digital ink products for a wide selection of digital printers. Nazdar Lyson Series digital inks are formulated to meet the exacting specifications of popular wide and grand format digital printers. Highlights include plug-and-play color; easy conversion; UV, solvent, and aqueous cartridges; a comprehensive warranty; and excellent media adhesion.182

Nazdar SourceOne, booth 4753, demonstrates a TeckStorm UV flatbed printer. Fitted with state-of-the-art Xaar 760 printhead technology, it is ideal for sign shops, quick printers, and small- to mid-size sign making or screenprinting businesses. In quality mode, the printer outputs at 100.8 sf/h and in production mode 198.3 sf/h.

Neschen Americas, booth 3921, launches the SEAL self adhesive vinyl product line. The new offering features three performance tiers—Digital Vinyl Performance, Digital Vinyl Capital, and Digital Vinyl Elite. Performance is available in a matte or gloss finish as a 3.5-mil calendered vinyl with removable adhesive. Capital is a 3-mil calendered, semi-polymeric vinyl with a gloss finish and permanent adhesive. Elite features a matte finish, with a choice of permanent or removable adhesive. It is a 3.4-mil thick calendered polymeric vinyl. Media is available in 54- or 60-inch by 150-foot rolls.

Oce North America, booth 4343, debuts the Oce Arizona 350 XT, capable of producing rigid prints up to 98.4x120 inches. The extra width enables continuous imaging for rigid media up to 49.2x98.4 inches. Two rigid boards of this size can be mounted on separate vacuum areas. While one board is printing, the other can be changed by the operator. An available white ink option enables under-printing for non-white media or objects, over-printing for backlit applications on transparent media, and printing white as a spot color. A roll media option allows users to print onto flexible media.

ONYX Graphics, Inc., booth 4128, exhibits the new ONYX PrepEdge Pro software, a professional job preparation tool designed specifically for large format workflow. ONYX PrepEdge Pro software eliminates the need for other job preparation applications and includes all production large format tools and a PDF editor. It reduces job preparation time by up to 75 percent, runs on Macintosh and Windows PC platforms, and works with all large format RIP software.

Oracal USA, booth 4721, provides hands-on demonstrations of cut vinyl and digital printing films. Among the featured products are ORACAL Series 951 Premium Cast Opaque Film, ORATAPE HT55 Decorative Film Application Tape, and ORAJET Series 3268 Movable Wall Graphics Inkjet Media. ORACAL Series 951 is a 2-mil cast opaque plotter film with up to 12 years outdoor life. It replaces Oracal’s existing Series 851 films, providing the same wide range of sizes, colors—117 including 20 metallic film colors, and gloss levels for easy customer transition.

Roland DGA Corporation, booth 3511, demonstrates the VersaArt 54- and 64-inch eco-solvent inkjet printers and the 30-inch VersaUV LEC-300. Other Roland inkjets include popular VersaCAMM VP series printer/cutters, AdvancedJET AJ series printers, the Hi-Fi Express FP-740 74-inch sublimation printer, and the SOLJET PRO III line including XJ printers and the XC-540 printer/cutter. Roland also features GX series vinyl cutters, R-Wear custom apparel solutions, and EGX engravers, including the new EGX-360 gift engraver.

SA International, booth 3715, showcases unique solutions for graphic design, cut vinyl, large format printing, engraving, routing, and vehicle wraps. SIGN.com is SAi’s online community for sign makers. Search and purchase learning resources, industry tools, and individual design elements such as fonts, clipart, automotive templates, textures, color guides, and so much more. Users can post unique images or art for others to purchase.

Sawgrass Technologies, Inc., booth 4725, unveils M Series Advance Aqueous pigment-based ink for flag and banner printers and digital textile print providers. The ink creates a chemical bond with digitally prepared natural and man-made fabrics including nylon, cotton, and silk. M series inks are formulated for digital textile printers from d.gen, DuPont, and Splash of Color.

Seiko I Infotech, booth 1115, announces the new ColorPainter H-74s mild-solvent inkjet printer. It joins the ColorPainter H-104s as part of Seiko’s H-series of high-performance printer. The new H-74s offers similar performance and features as the ColorPainter H-104s, but a smaller footprint. The new H-74s printers have a MSRP of $59,999.95 and are available through authorized ColorPainter distributors. The 74-inch printer features eight new high-frequency piezo inkjet printheads, which offer true 720x720 dpi resolution. 191

Summa, Inc., booth 3505, displays OPOS-CAM, the print/cut industry’s first camera recognition alignment solution for friction driven drum cutters. OPOS-CAM represents the latest development in the evolution of Summa’s revolutionary OPOS contour cutting alignment system. Using advanced camera optics technology, OPOS-CAM delivers marker recognition specially suited to meet the demanding needs of wide format graphics companies and inkjet printer vendors.

Tara Materials, booth 3726, launches Fredrix Print Canvas 777 Vivid. Formerly 777BWR, it is reformulated with a new ink receptive coating that sets the standard for color and DMAX. The easily top coated surface and smooth texture are perfectly suited for fine art reproductions, giclŽes, and photography. The 777 Vivid is designed for pigmented inks and water-based top coats with sizes ranging from 17- to 60-inch widths.

Teckwin International, booth 3353, introduces the TeckStorm R, a roll-to-roll UV flatbed. The new roll-to-roll option provides the TeckStorm with new functions including printing on both rigid and flexible media, continuous printing on flexible media, stable and secured media feeding and take-up system, accurate double-sided printing, and easy rigid and flexible material shift. The flatbed vacuum ensures that rigid material is stable during printing. The roll-to-roll function expands the number of applications that professionals can now reach.

Tex Visions LLC, booth 5032, exhibits the Bowflag 100, a versatile indoor and outdoor advertising tool adaptable to different environments from showrooms to shopping malls, restaurants, and sporting events. The Bowflag 100 is unique to any campaign and available in several shapes, sizes, and base options. Tex Visions custom prints advertising flags, banners, POP displays, umbrellas, and trade show backdrops.

Triangle Digital INX Co., booth 4926, displays mild-solvent and solvent ink cartridges designed for use in Roland SOLJET series printers and Mimaki JV5 and JV33 printers utilizing Triangle’s PicturePerfect inks. Triangle answers market demand with inks in smaller packaging for printers not ready to make the switch to bulk ink. Cartridges are available in four or six colors dependant on the printer series and offer the same high quality formulation, performance, and color gamut as regular bulk inks.

Ultraflex Systems, Inc., booth 4553, presents SuperPrint Lite FL, a 6.5-ounce matte finish, gray backed PVC media for frontlit and billboard applications. This material has no PVC on the backside making it lightweight, easy to transport and install, and easily recyclable. Ultraflex also adds BIOmesh; a biodegradable mesh banner media and Strip Mesh Wide; a PVC backing, replacing the previous porous paper-like backer.

Universal Laser Systems, booth 4969, highlights a suite of solutions. With a Universal laser system, cut, mark, and engrave detailed, intricate patterns, tight curves and angles, letters, and shapes in acrylic, plastic, wood, vinyl, marble, glass, and metal. Create new applications and add unique effects. Deliver impressive signage, including architectural, indoor, outdoor and 3-D signage, channel letters, and POP. Systems are available with engraving areas from 16x12 to 48x24 inches. Universal’s Industrial Laser Series offers optional pass-through for processing items of unlimited length.

US Sublimation, booth 4753, launches the Velotex Xpress direct dye-sub system for graphics, flag, and banner production. The Velotex Xpress creates products such as table coverings, double-sided flags, and drapes. It is easy to operate and as safe as an aqueous wide format printer, with all the outdoor benefits of a solvent printer. Fabric is loaded onto the printer like paper. The image is processed through RIP software included with each system. The information is sent to the printer and the printed fabric that results is cured, with no need for subsequent processing. A curing unit is incorporated into the printer, just like a dryer is part of a solvent printer.

Vista System International, booth 4213, debuts a new system of lightweight, suspended signs. The ceiling signs are assembled from two identical aluminum extrusions—top and bottom, with plastic or aluminum end caps on both sides. Two plastic clips, which are inserted in the top extrusion, are used for connecting the two hanging cables. The clips are secured to the sign extrusion by clicking it in. The modularity allows for easily connecting numerous sections stacked one below the other to create a multi-panel system.

Wasatch Computer Technology, booth 5553, showcases SoftRIP Version 6.5. This version includes the Wasatch Cost Estimator, which accurately calculates job costs before production, helping take control of printing costs. This feature simplifies calculations on ink usage, media costs, and extra processing charges. Also with this update is an expanded suite of ICC profiles, an improved Profile View, an updated Precision Stochastic Screens half toning method, and a new Performance Mode in SoftRIP TX that increases the rate of output by up to ten times.

WP Digital AG, a division of the WIFAG Polytype Group, booth 2511, offers three new Swiss built Virtu digital printers to meet the needs of advertising and graphics markets. The new Virtu product line includes two hybrid printers in 98- and 138-inch widths with options including roll-to-roll capabilities for printing direct to flexible media and white ink for printing on colored media. The latest introduction to the Virtu line is the roll-to-roll 197-inch grand format printer for printing flexible media at ultra fast production speeds. It is ideal for building wraps, billboards, banners, and vehicle graphics. It runs up to three rolls concurrently to increase printer productivity.

X-Rite, Inc., booth 1711, demonstrates innovative solutions for communicating and managing color accurately from design to print, ensuring consistency throughout the entire workflow. X-Rite provides color management systems for profiling and calibrating scanners, monitors, RIPs, and printers; and quality control tools—handheld and scanning—for checking proofs, spot colors, and prints. X-Rite tools increase color accuracy and reduce waste in wide format workflow.

Zund, booth 5543, features the newest line of Zund G3 multifunctional cutting/routing tables. The Modular Tool System offers flexibility with up to three cutting/routing tools operating at any given time. Zund offers a vast selection of tools for the G3 table including a high performance 1 kW routing spindle; electric and pneumatic oscillating knives; rotary cutting blades; and through cut, kiss cut, v-cut, and creasing/scoring tools. The Zund G3 series is ideal for customers looking to convert printed and unprinted materials, create boxes and prototypes, generate POP displays, or expand finishing options.
