Stuck on Wallcoverings

A Selection of Media

Part 3 of 4

By Melissa Donovan

In the first half of our series on digital wallcoverings we focused on the advantages of this application, as well as the advancements that drive its popularity. Here we include a list of media suitable for wallcovering applications.

3M Graphics Market Center’s DI-NOC Architectural Finisher is an 8-mil printed vinyl available in rolls of 48 inches by 165 feet. The media is available in over 600 patterns including wood, metal, marble, leather, stone, and stucco. Clients can also create customized patterns or colors. DI-NOC is used in hotels, high-end retail stores, and commercial buildings. It is warranted for 12 years indoor and four years outdoor use.

Arlon Inc.’s DPF 8000 is a 3.8-mil engineering grade, digitally printable, pressure-sensitive vinyl available in 30-, 49-, 54-, and 60-inch by 50 yard rolls. The product is available in a satin finish, users can add an overlaminate if a different finish—such as gloss or matte—is required.

MPI 2611 Wall Film, from Avery Dennison, is a calendered film with removable adhesive, specifically made for digitally printed wall applications printed with solvent, eco-solvent, and UV-curable inks. It is available in a luster finish, limiting glare while providing a sophisticated look. Size availability includes 54x50 and 54x25 yard rolls.

Big Systems, LLC offers SeraMark, available for solvent, eco-solvent, and UV-curable printing in 30-, 54-, and 60-inch wide rolls. It is also available for aqueous printing in 24-, 36-, 42-, and 60-inch wide rolls. All rolls are 100 feet in length. Available in smooth low-satin, the fabric material is coated to provide a white surface with less fabric mesh penetration.

BullDog Digital Imaging Products, Inc.’s newest offering is Appliqué, a photo-quality, repositionable, adhesive-backed vinyl. It is available in widths of 17, 24, and 44 inches. This material carries a Type II Class A fire rating, ideal for commercial applications, hospitality, and restaurant installation without the need for a wallpaper installer.

Catalina Graphic Films, Inc. Wall Graphics wallcovering vinyl is available in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-mil white and clear options with a special removable and reusable adhesive. Applicable to smooth and most painted walls, it can be top-coated and non top-coated for printing.

DreamScape offers both a certified, commercial grade Type II wallcovering in 15 textures and the new Wall Wrap adhesive-backed wallcovering in three textures. Wall Wrap features a fire retardant adhesive with a minimum expected life of two years. It applies to painted drywall, glass, metal, wood paneling, and display board. Standard lengths include 75, 160, and 300 feet; custom widths and lengths are available. Both products are printable with solvent, eco-solvent, and UV-curable inks.

InteliCoat Technologies offers a variety of media for wallcoverings. The company’s Mural Pro is a 12-mil, latex-based inkjet wallcovering media for residential, commercial, and retail design. A universal coating provides a wide range of printer compatibility across thermal and piezo printer systems. Magic PosterMax features a luster finish at 8.5-mil. It is a one-sided coated paper designed for use with solvent and eco-solvent inkjet printers. Also latex-saturated, the wet strength paper resists cracking when folded. Another latex-saturated product is Magic GFIOP212 EMB. An embossed version of GFIOP212, the embossed pattern adds texture that enhances appearance in applications.

LexJet Corporation carries wallcoverings from DreamScape and Photo Tex. Photo Tex features a repositionable adhesive, a fabric texture, and is compatible with solvent and aqueous inks. Widths range from 11 to 60 inches. Jeff Leto, product manager, LexJet notes, "Photo Tex works well for permanent applications, but not in cases where there is a lot of public access and traffic since the material is more sensitive to the prying fingers of passerby."

Lintec of America’s entire Printerior product line consists of flame retardant and PVC free wallcoverings. Printerior is considered more environmentally friendly due to the absence of PVC and solvent inks. The media is a true paper designed for printing with aqueous pigmented inks. It is available in several finishes such as stucco, linen, and flat.

MACtac Graphic Products offers several wallcovering options—WallNOODLE WN628, IMAGin digiTrans JDT429, RoughRAP WW100, IMAGin EMR328, and StreetRAP STR328. WallNOODLE is available in up to 54 inches by 100 feet and lasts indoors six years or more. DigiTrans is suggested for use up to five years indoor and available in a range of dimensions. For rough or textured wallcoverings, MACtac offers RoughRAP and StreetRAP. StreetRAP is unique in that it is recommended for use on untreated concrete walls, cement pillars, and cinderblock walls—hard to adhere surfaces. MACtac does not offer any special finishing textures, but because of these compatible surfaces, the textures of the wall translate through the media.

KoroGraphics’ Digital Wallcoverings come in roll sizes of 60 yards. A Type II certified grade commercial wallcovering, several textures are available including stucco, mosaic, and silk. The wallcovering is applied with paste.

Oracal USA manufactures ORAJET Series 3628 Interior Wall & Window Graphics Inkjet Media for wallcovering applications including wall murals. Series 3628 is a 3-mil matte surface calendered film with a low-tack water-based adhesive for ease of installation and removal. A matching ORAGUARD laminating film is also available in both matte and gloss finishes. ORAJET Series 3268 Movable Wall Graphics Inkjet Media is a 6-mil calendered film featuring a very low-tack adhesive for ease of installation and removal. A three year indoor durability rating makes it ideal for a range of wallcovering applications.

Ritrama Inc.’s Wall Talkers is a 6-mil, five year outdoor durable, matte white film featuring an ultra-low peel removable adhesive specifically designed for wallcoverings and other applications including POP and trade show displays.

Ultraflex Systems, Inc.’s Wallscapes are used for wallcoverings printed with UV, solvent, or screenprinting. Three finishes are available—suede, stardust, and matte. The media is available in standard 56-inch by 300-foot rolls.
