FESPA in Progress

What's Happening on the Show Floor

By Melissa Donovan

On the heels of the recent announcement regarding FESPA Americas taking place from February 24 to 26, 2011 in Orlando, FL alongside the Graphics of the Americas show, FESPA 2010 is in full swing in Munich, Germany and concludes on June 26. The international event expects 35,000 visitors—based on pre-registration statistics—worldwide to check out the newest, innovative solutions in the graphic arts. Over 700 exhibitors are spread out over five halls. We’re out on the floor and for those of you who couldn’t make it, here is a brief overview of the show, which we will continue to update!

Caldera Graphics is announcing a host of new products. Costview 2.0 now enables users to monitor print jobs via Apple’s iPad. The tool is a production management solution that allows for all print job costs to be calculated, including printing, finishing, shipping, machine amortization, and more. The company also launches EasyColor, a spectrophotometer for the linearization and profiling of photographic and wide format output devices for flexible reflective and transparent materials. In addition, Caldera’s new V8 RIP solution powers a variety of hardware found on the show floor including Durst’s Rho 100 and 750, Epson’s Stylus Pro GS6000, Gerber’s ionZ and M-class cutter, Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) Scitex printers, INX International Milano printers, KIP’s Color KC 80, Matan’s Barak HS, Mutoh printers, Seiko’s ColorPainter series, and SwissQprint’s Oryx device.

EFI demonstrates its MediaMaster system on the VUTEk GS3200 for the first time in Europe. The fully-automated material handling system is equipped to handle full-size 1.5x3-meter boards at up to 50 beds per hour and also masters as many as three-up smaller boards across the width of the printer, enabling the production of over 150 boards per hour.

Fujifilm North America Corporation launches its new Acuity Advance HS-X2 flatbed printer, which offers a print area of 98x120 inches. The X2 employs a dual zoning system with independent vacuum control, resulting in printing in one zone while setting up in the second. The dual zones allow end users to print two four- by eight-foot sheets simultaneously, a time- and cost-saving solution for those looking to efficiently produce more output.

Gerber Scientific Products debuts its Gerber CAT UV flatbed printer. The device utilizes Gerber CAT inks, which provide superior adhesion and scratch resistance. Like the rest of the ion printer family, Cold Fire Cure technology supports printing on a wide array of substrates, allowing for the creation of graphics on heat-sensitive and recycled materials.

GMG’s SmartProfiler, an add-on for its color management solution—ColorServer, allows print service providers to create custom color profiles and printer calibrations. Visitors can witness the SmartProfiler in action at HP’s booth on the Scitex printer line or Mimaki’s booth, on the UJF-3042 A3 flatbed printer. Roland’s VersaUV LEC-330 printer is also compatible with GMG’s SmartProfiler and ColorServer products.

Media manufacturer Hexis launches its NATURally environmentally friendly line of PVC-free films. Two new latex-based films fall under this line, HXL300WG2 and PL300CG. HXL300WG2 is a self-adhesive film designed for solvent inkjet printers compatible with MUBIO inks from Mutoh and HP’s Latex inks. Complementing HXL300WG2 is cold laminate PL300CG—a clear gloss coated with a pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive.

HP, who recently announced numerous new products at IPEX in May, introduces the Scitex FB700, a 98-inch version of the new FB500 UV flatbed printer. Like its predecessor, the FB700 offers optional white ink, foldable tables, and a load while printing feature. This device is scheduled to ship September 2010. HP also announces its position as chair of the Wide Format Workroom of The International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press, and Postpress Organization. The committee was established to define open JDF standards for wide format printing workflows. HP and many of its alliance partners realize the allure of a streamlined workflow in the digital marketplace and hope to educate screenprinters on the benefits.

INX Digital International introduces a host of new ink sets. Eco Bulk ink is part of the company’s “green” recycling program. The new ink delivery system is designed with cardboard and comprised of one box of ink. Silver inkjet ink runs on the Mimaki JV3 printer demonstrating its usage for the label and packaging markets. A new water-based textile ink is designed for direct printing on synthetic fabrics with printers utilizing Epson printheads. Triangle AXB superwide format inks also make a debut, they are UV-resistant for up to three years. Triangle AXM inks are a solvent product and designed to function as a cross-platform ink.

Matan Digital Printers provides live demonstrations of the new Barak high-speed (HS) modes on its 3.5- and five-meter Barak printers. The HS mode allows users to efficiently print billboard- and point of purchase-quality jobs without switching between various ink types.

Joining Océ’s Arizona flatbed printer portfolio is the 550 XT extra-large UV printer, capable of outputting on a variety of substrates up to 98.4x120 inches. It features a production print mode of 462 square feet per hour (sf/h) and 709 sf/h in express mode. In addition, a roll media option allows users to print roll-based media up to 86.6 inches wide.

Roland DG Corporation showcases the new CAMM-1 PRO Series GX-640 vinyl cutter, a 64-inch device, it is the company’s widest cutter to date. It features Roland’s optical registration system, Quadralign, which reads pre-printed crop marks and accurately aligns the graphic. This allows the GX-640 to automatically contour cut pre-printed designs with precision. Packaged with the cutter is Roland’s CutStudio design software, which allows users to create vector graphics and import BITMAP and JPEG images.
