HP Furthers Collaboration with Photo Industry Luminaries
New York, Oct. 18, 2007 - HP today announced collaborations with photographic legend Albert Watson and
leading photographic institution Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), marking the company’s continued
advancement in professional photo printing and demonstrating its commitment to the photo community.
HP is exhibiting Albert Watson’s masterful images - created on HP professional photo printers - at PhotoPlus
International Conference and Expo (PPE) in New York City Oct. 18-20.
HP also announced today it is providing more than 50 professional-level photo printers for RIT’s digital labs in
the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences, giving students as well as faculty access to the latest in digital
photo printing technology.
"We have seen tremendous movement in the professional photo space with increasing customer demand and
overall sales growth for our platforms," said Patrick Hester, director, Large Format Printing, Imaging and Printing
Group, HP. "As part of our Print 2.0 strategy, we have enhanced the printing experience to meet the needs of
professional photographers, like Albert Watson and RIT students and faculty, enabling them to print exquisite,
enduring prints."
Prints for a legend
Albert Watson is one of the world’s most successful and sought-after commercial and art photographers. His
striking portraits have appeared on more than 250 covers of Vogue magazine, and he has photographed more
than 600 major advertising campaigns. Watson turned to HP professional photo printers to make many of his
powerful images stand out in print.
Printed on HP’s latest digital photo printing technology, a stunning gallery of Watson’s images will be exhibited
at the HP Galleries located in the HP Booth, #736, at PPE.
HP is also sponsoring a special event, "Albert Watson: Meet the Master," at PPE where attendees are invited
to hear from Watson. This event takes place on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the Jacob Javits Convention
Center, Seminar Hall 1E, Rooms 1E15/1E16.
HP supports photographic community
Demonstrating its continued commitment to the creative community, HP has teamed with leading industry
organizations, showcasing the performance and quality of its professional photo printer portfolio while at the
same time supporting education in the field of photography.
HP is helping RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in its ongoing move toward digital printing. HP
announced it has provided HP Photosmart Pro B9180 and HP Designjet Z3100 Photo Printer series to RIT for
use in the school’s digital photography labs.
"RIT is thrilled about the opportunity to put leading-edge technology from HP in the hands of our students,
faculty and staff," said William DuBois, administrative chair, School of Photographic Arts & Sciences, RIT.
"The transition from analog to digital is undeniable, and the printers and training HP has provided are giving
our faculty the knowledge and resources to teach the next generation of photographers all facets of the
workflow using the latest in printing technology."
According to RIT, it sees the new printers as an opportunity to manage printing costs, a concern for educational
institutions where students are responsible for supplying their own inks and media. Initial testing by RIT shows
that with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 and HP Designjet Z3100 Photo Printer series students conserve ink
for actual printing due to the fact that the printheads are designed to prevent nozzle clogs, reducing need for
extensive cleaning and ensuring efficient printing.
"We look forward to cost-savings for our students as we roll out HP’s platforms," added DuBois. "Students
can use their ink to create compelling photographic output rather than printer management."
In addition to its work with RIT, HP served as the exclusive printing sponsor of this year’s Splashlight Photo
Booth and printing station at all Lucie Awards events, which took place just days ago in New York City. The
Splashlight Photo Booth captured images of attendees, who received beautiful and enduring photos printed
on the spot using the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 Photo Printer.
